Wawashkamo GC, named for the Indian word meaning "walk a crooked trail," was the brainchild of a group of cottage owners who got together and hired Scottish golf pro Alex Smith to build the course. It opened in 1898 and is the oldest continually operated nine hole golf course in Michigan. Designed in a similar fashion to St. Andrews, the fairways are designated by mowed grassy areas framing the straight fairways. Unique still, are the tiny greens and tee boxes and periodic history lessons throughout. A notable novelty is the offering of hickory sticks rentals for $40 per player. Play with these and find out exactly how good guys like Snead & Sarazen actually were. Their website, www.wawashkamo.com, gives a complete history of the property and scorecard to peruse. It is an experience for the love of the game where history lives on throughout your round.
